Do You Have Faith? | Pastor Al Furey

The start of a new year often brings questions that feel bigger than usual. We look back, think forward, and sometimes wonder where we really stand when it comes to what matters most. One question we have been thinking about and asking ourselves is, “Do you have faith?” It sounds simple, but it goes deep.

During these winter months in Gainesville and Nokesville, Virginia, things can feel quieter. The pace slows down, giving us more space to think. When the roads get icy or school plans change, we are reminded of how little we really control. Faith becomes more than a church word; it becomes something we lean on, something real. Following Jesus is not just about Sunday mornings. It shows up in how we treat people, how we handle challenges, and how we keep going when things are unclear.

What Is Faith, Really?

Faith is not just believing something because it sounds nice. It is trusting God even when we cannot see the whole picture. It is choosing to believe that He is good, He is near, and He is working, even when life feels off.

Some of us believe God loves us, but still wonder why we have not seen a breakthrough. That is part of faith too: trusting in His promises without needing every answer right now. One simple verse says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). It is about believing that God is who He says He is, before we have full proof in front of us.

When we read Luke 6:38 or 2 Corinthians 9:8, it paints a picture of a God who cares and provides. He sees us, loves us, and wants us to live trusting Him. Faith shapes how we talk to God, how we make decisions, and how we view what is coming next, even if we are unsure what exactly that is.

Why Faith Matters More Than Ever

Life does not always offer clear answers. There are seasons that stretch us, where prayers seem to go unanswered, or the future feels messy. Those are the times when faith can feel hardest, but also the most important.

We might not feel strong, but those are moments when we get to lean on God even more. Faith does not mean feeling great all the time. Sometimes it looks like reading a single verse before bed when everything else feels heavy or praying a quiet “help me” when we do not even know what to say. When schools close early here in Virginia because of snow or a work plan suddenly shifts, faith helps us stay steady.

We have all had times when we did not know what was next, financially, relationally, or spiritually. Faith matters in those moments because it points us back to God, back to His steady love and promises we can trust, even in the dark.

How Jesus Shows Us Real Faith

Jesus did not just teach about faith; He lived it. From the very beginning of His time on earth, He trusted the Father completely. He gave up what He had to walk among us and rely fully on God. He prayed early, stayed close to Scripture, and leaned on faith in every situation.

When He went to the cross, it was not because things felt easy or clear. He trusted the plan even in pain. That kind of faith changed everything for us. His life shows that faith is not about being comfortable; it is about staying connected to the Father no matter what happens.

We can let His example shape our follow-through. Our prayers, our service, our forgiveness of others, all grow from that same kind of faith. It involves trust, action, and following God even when it requires sacrifice.

Growing Your Faith as a Family

Faith was never meant to be something we figure out on our own. It grows stronger when we walk it out with others, especially in our families. In homes around Gainesville and Nokesville, we have seen how small acts of faith within a family make a big difference.

• Reading a Bible story at bedtime

• Praying before school

• Encouraging kids to talk with God

These are all small seeds that grow lasting fruit. When kids see parents invite Jesus into decisions or serve others with joy, they learn faith in a way that sticks.

Even busy families can find ways to grow in faith together. It might be attending a Bible study or helping a neighbor carry groceries. The goal is not to be perfect, but to be consistent. When faith feels like a regular part of life, it becomes something we all carry together.

For When Your Faith Feels Small

We all have days when we feel like our faith is not enough. Maybe we are unsure, or maybe doubt sneaks in after sleepless nights or hard news. But Jesus did not say we need giant faith. He said if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, it is enough to move mountains.

That means our shaky trust, spoken in a quiet prayer, still matters to Him. We do not have to have all the answers. We can bring our questions, fears, and hopes straight to God. He does not ask us to pretend; He just invites us to stick close.

If your faith feels small right now, that is okay. Keep showing up. Keep asking. Keep choosing hope over fear, even if it is just for today. God works in the small things, and He sees every honest effort we make.

Living by Faith, One Day at a Time

Faith is not a one-time decision or a mountaintop moment. It is a daily walk. Trusting God in the little things grows our faith over time. We might not always feel it, but each choice to be patient, to pray, or to love someone well is another step forward.

Living by faith means showing up to the ordinary with trust. Letting God guide our schedule, shaping our priorities, and giving us peace when life feels noisy is all part of that walk. Some days we stride forward with confidence, while other days we inch ahead. Either way, we keep going as God leads us.

Choosing Steady Faith

So we ask again: do you have faith? Maybe it is brewing quietly beneath the surface, or maybe it is bold and growing. Whatever shape it takes, let us keep choosing Jesus, one step, one prayer, one day at a time.

At Love Church, we believe that every step in faith is a journey best taken together. If you're seeking a welcoming place to grow spiritually and deepen your connection with others, we'd love to be a part of that journey. Our doors and hearts are open as a warm and inviting Gainesville Christian church. Come discover how small acts of faith can lead to a lifetime of transformation and trust in the Lord.
