A Proper Understanding of God's Design and Desire For His Church | Pastor Josh Baird
Understanding the Church and its true purpose is vital for anyone exploring or growing in their faith. The Church is not just a building where people gather on Sundays. It is a community, a family, and for believers, the bride of Christ. Recognizing the Church's role in one’s spiritual journey helps develop a strong and meaningful connection with God. This bond is key in building a faith that is alive and lasting.
At Love Church, Pastor Josh Baird often shares how God’s design for the Church reveals His heart for His people. When we see worship, connection, and outreach the way God intended, we realize they’re not separate tasks. They are all part of one unified calling. We're here to help you explore what this means and how being part of the Church can impact your life for the better.
Worship God: Our Ministry to Him
Worship is where everything in the Church begins. Worship is more than singing or music. It’s about honoring God every day in the way we live, speak, serve, and give. The Church exists first to minister to God, just like the Levites were called to do in Deuteronomy 10:8. They were chosen to stand before the Lord, bless His name, and serve Him. Today, we get to carry that same calling.
In 1 Peter 2, believers are described as a holy priesthood. This tells us that it’s not just pastors or worship leaders who bring praise to God—it’s all of us. Luke 10:41-42 tells the story of Mary and Martha, where Mary chose to sit at Jesus’s feet. Jesus said she made the better choice. Sometimes, worship means pausing everything else just to be close to God.
Worship should be at the center of what we do. It prepares our hearts, invites God’s presence, and builds unity among us. Without worship, the Church becomes disconnected from its true source of strength.
Here are some ways we can all grow in worship:
- Come ready and expectant to services. Arrive on time and set your heart on meeting with God.
- Talk with your kids about why we worship. Help them know it's more than singing—it's giving God the best part of us.
- Make space for personal devotion throughout your week so you’re connected to God outside of church gatherings.
When worship is our starting point, everything else becomes clearer. Our faith is refreshed, our confidence in God grows, and our community becomes stronger.
Equip the Saints: Building Up Believers
The Church isn’t just a place for worship. It’s also a place where each person is equipped to live out their faith. We are all on a journey of becoming more like Jesus. But we’re not meant to do it alone. God uses the Church to teach, challenge, and strengthen us along the way.
Colossians 1:28 says we are to be taught and warned so we can grow into maturity in Christ. Ephesians 4:12-13 shows that church leaders are called to equip believers to do God's work. They weren’t meant to do everything themselves. The goal is for every person to find their purpose and use their gifts inside and outside the Church.
This happens in many ways:
- Sunday services give clear, biblical teaching to help us grow.
- Small groups let us connect deeply, share life, and pray for each other.
- Prayer gatherings help bring unity and focus as we seek God together.
- Serving others reminds us that faith is meant to be lived out, not just learned.
When churches make space to equip people, the results are powerful. Believers step into leadership, families grow stronger, and communities are impacted by people who live their faith every day. The Church becomes a place where people don’t just attend—they are trained and released to fulfill their God-given roles.
Reach the World: Evangelism and Outreach
One of the main roles of the Church is to reach people who don’t yet know Jesus. Evangelism can sound like a big word, but really it’s just about sharing what has changed our lives. That mission was given by Jesus himself in Matthew 28:18-20, known as the Great Commission. He told His followers to go, share the gospel, baptize, and teach. He promised to be with them as they did it.
Some people think that talking about Jesus is just for pastors or people with certain skills. But the truth is, everyone who belongs to Christ has a role in reaching others. Your story matters. Your words and actions can lead someone else to a full relationship with God.
Here are four steps anyone can take to start reaching the world:
1. Pray every day for people in your life who need to encounter God.
2. Build real friendships with people inside and outside the Church.
3. Be ready to share what God has done in your life honestly and simply.
4. Celebrate and support baptisms as a picture of lives being transformed.
Reaching others isn’t about having all the right answers. It’s about love, consistency, and keeping God at the center. When everyone embraces this mission, the Church grows—not just in numbers, but in impact and heart.
Living Out God's Vision for the Church
When we fully live God’s design for the Church, everything becomes clearer. Worship sets the tone. Equipping gives us strength and direction. Reaching the world gives us purpose beyond ourselves. Each part matters—and they work best when practiced in that order.
The Church loses its power when things get flipped. Trying to reach the world without worship weakens our message. Going out without being equipped leaves us unsure. But when worship comes first, everything else falls into place. This is how the Church was created to function. It reflects God's love and draws others into His family.
God didn’t call us to be passive attendees. He invites us to be active participants. He wants you to live your faith out loud, encourage others, and bring people along with you. Being part of a local church family like Love Church isn’t just about attending services. It’s about growing together, worshiping shoulder to shoulder, and reaching out hand in hand.
That’s the kind of Church we’re building—one devoted to Jesus and committed to doing things His way. We welcome everyone to take that next step and discover how life-changing it can be to live out God’s purpose alongside a caring, committed community.
