The Person and Purpose of the Holy Spirit | Pastor Josh Baird

Holy Spirit

When we hear the name Holy Spirit, it can feel unclear or unfamiliar. Some of us may picture a force, a feeling, or something we can’t quite explain. But the Bible paints a much clearer picture. The Holy Spirit isn’t just some vague power that floats around. He’s a real person, part of the Trinity, just like the Father and the Son.

In this message from Pastor Josh Baird, we take a closer look at the person and purpose of the Holy Spirit. Whether this is your first time hearing about Him or you’ve been walking with God for years, our hope is that you come away understanding more about how the Spirit works in our lives. For those of us living in Gainesville, Virginia, this is a good time to consider how God meets us right here, right now, through His Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Is a Person, Not a Thing

Let’s start with one important truth. The Holy Spirit is not an “it.” He’s not a vibe or energy. He is fully God and has all the qualities of a person. In Scripture, we see Him speak, teach, feel emotions, lead, and make decisions.

The Spirit is often mentioned in ways that show He’s personal and active:

  • John 14:26 tells us the Holy Spirit teaches us and reminds us of what Jesus said.

  • Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps us when we don’t know how to pray.

  • Ephesians 4:30 even reminds us not to grieve the Holy Spirit.

These are not things a “force” does. That’s who He is: someone who talks with us, helps us understand what Jesus taught, and stays near in every season of life. If we’ve ever thought of the Holy Spirit as distant or confusing, it helps to start here and remember He is close, caring, and real.

Why the Holy Spirit Was Sent

Jesus knew His time on earth would be short. But He didn’t plan to leave us alone. Before going back to the Father, He told His followers He would send the Holy Spirit, the Helper, to guide, comfort, and teach.

In John 16:7, Jesus explains that it’s actually better for us that He goes so the Helper can come. That tells us a lot. The job of the Holy Spirit was never a backup plan. He plays a key role in our lives now. He helps us know God’s truth when the world gives us mixed messages. He gives us courage when we’re afraid to stand strong in our faith. He keeps pointing us back to Jesus when we get distracted or worried.

The Holy Spirit is how we keep going when things get heavy. He makes God’s Word come alive and shows us how to live it out. In every part of life, from church to work to school, He helps us hear God’s voice and follow where He leads. Sometimes these ways are quiet and gentle, sometimes bolder. Either way, His help is always available.

The Holy Spirit Lives Inside Every Believer

If you're a believer in Jesus, the Holy Spirit already lives in you. That happens the moment you say yes to Christ. God’s Word says that our bodies become a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). That means we’re not trying to reach out to some faraway place hoping God hears us. He’s already here.

That nearness brings peace. He comforts us when we’re hurting, teaches us when we’re learning, and corrects us when we’re heading the wrong way. He never leaves. Jesus calls Him the Spirit of Truth who “lives with you and will be in you” (John 14:17).

As we walk with God, the Holy Spirit works in us from the inside out. He shapes our responses, softens our hearts, and leads us to become more like Jesus, one step at a time. Growth isn’t always fast, but it’s steady because He is always working. Little changes build up over time. Each day, the Spirit helps us see life from God’s perspective and guides us to do what honors Him.

The Gifts and Fruit of the Spirit

When we think of the Holy Spirit working in our lives, two things often come to mind: His gifts and His fruit. These are two different, but equally important, ways He helps us live out our faith.

Gifts of the Spirit are special ways God equips us to serve and build up His people. These can look like teaching, faith, wisdom, helping, leadership, and many more mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12. Not everyone has the same gifts, and that’s a good thing. When we each use what God has given us, the church becomes stronger.

Then there’s the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. These are traits that grow in us as we stay close to God:

1. Love

2. Joy

3. Peace

4. Patience

5. Kindness

6. Goodness

7. Faithfulness

8. Gentleness

9. Self-control

These aren’t things we work hard to earn. They come naturally from walking closely with the Spirit. Just like fruit grows on a healthy tree, these grow in us when we stay connected to God.

Gifts and fruit work together. The Spirit uses our gifts to help others experience God’s love and encouragement, and He grows fruit in us that others can see. When we serve generously and love deeply, people notice. Both gifts and fruit are important as we grow in faith, and both remind us how close God really is.

The Holy Spirit Walks With Us Every Day

Understanding the person and purpose of the Holy Spirit isn’t only about Sunday mornings. His presence shapes the little moments, too. He’s with us when we’re folding laundry, stuck in traffic, having a hard conversation, or sitting in quiet prayer.

With summer going strong here in Gainesville, it’s a good time to slow our pace. Love Church invites families to participate in kids ministry from birth through grade 5 on Sundays at both 9AM and 11AM services, helping even the youngest learn about God's love. These moments, shared in community, often become the times we’re most aware of the Spirit guiding and teaching us, both children and adults alike.

We don’t have to earn His help. We just have to keep our hearts open and stay aware that He’s near. When we welcome the Spirit into our everyday routines, we notice God’s hand in the details: comforting, correcting, or encouraging us as needed. Sometimes He prompts us to pray or reach out to someone. Other times, He simply gives us peace when things don’t go as planned. Every day, He is drawing us into closer friendship with God.

Closer Than We Think

The Holy Spirit isn’t far away or hard to know. He is God with us, guiding and helping us each step of the way. From understanding Scripture to showing love to others, He is working gently within our everyday lives. We’re not forgotten or left to figure things out on our own. He is near, always leading us closer to the heart of God.

At Love Church, Sunday worship gatherings typically last 80 to 90 minutes, creating space for teaching, worship, and time to listen for the Spirit’s direction. In a place like Gainesville, recognizing the Holy Spirit’s role can bring new confidence and calm to our faith. He is a gift that keeps growing as we walk with Him and trust His leading.

Sometimes, we can forget how close and active He really is. The Spirit works in little ways and big moments. Quiet guidance, unexpected wisdom, or a little nudge to do something kind can all be signs of His help and care.
